Even decades after unattended childhood abuse, the victims remain imprisoned by inner pain, guilty feelings, and self-limiting beliefs. They typically indulge in self-defeating behaviours and, more often than not, they become victims of abuse on repeat.
Ironically such victims spend their lives trying to recompense for the trauma and pain suffered, instead of, upon acknowledging its presence, trying to find a way to eject the pain and begin to heal.
Rather than write poetry for entertainment Zimbili Shezi, the author of this book, chose to present through poetry, a journey of the abused who sought to rid themselves of the incapacitating and victimising effects of their trauma, and to find a way to heal.
In this volume Zimbili divided the healing journey into 3 sections which are:
•Sleety Rains
• Break Free
• Live again
Three poems, (Say Not, What Is Freedom? and Our Journey Begins Today), consecutively capture well the feel of the journey in each section.
Zimbili believes we all have a responsibility to ourselves to seek inner healing when we are traumatised, even as this journey can be severely painful. Truly we must embark on it to honour our inner child, (our inner self) to be restored to our former state of well-being, to thrive and become creative again; to prosper. Otherwise we become a pain to ourselves and others, just because we are in pain.
